Egypt markets to boost exports
Ashok Leyland is banking on Asian markets like Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Egypt, other African
countries and West Asia for growth in overseas business. Ashok Leyland is also hoping for a recovery
in Bangladesh's economy, to increase sales of their products in Bangladesh. Currently the company
sells around 1,100-1,200 units of production per month in the subcontinent, Gulf and African
markets. Most of which are light commercial vehicles (LCVs) and buses.
Ashok Leyland's President (LCV, International Operations, Defence, and Power Solutions) Amandeep
Singh said, "Within two years, it plans to expand its export market from 38 countries to 50 countries.
Bangladesh and Sri Lanka accounted for 50% of sales till 2019. Bangladesh is the market on recovery
we will add another 500 units a month. Currently, we have nine plants in SAARC, Middle East and
Africa and four more are in the works- two in Africa and two more in Middle East-North Africa. We
will complete a CKD assembly plant in Indonesia or Malaysia within 6 months,”. In the domestic
market, Ashok Leyland plans to complete a sub- 2 tonne LCVs — powered by electric and internal
combustion engines — will account for an additional 20% of the LCV market within a year. About 1.8
lakh LCVs were sold in the sub-2 tonne category in India last year. Tata Motors with the Ace being the
market leader in this segment, has several three-wheeler players. Ashok Leyland will expand the
Bada Dost portfolio which currently has two models of 3.2 tonne and 3.5 tonne to add another 3.8
tonne capacity.
Amandeep Singh said, “Last year, 3.3 lakh LCVs of 2-3.5 tonnes capacity were sold in India. We are
trying to improve our market share in the North and East. Although these markets account for 39%
of vehicle sales, the two markets account for only 12% of our sales."
Ashok Leyland sold 67,000 units last year to overtake Tata Motors to the second position. The rest of
the market (3.5 tonnes to 7.5 tonnes) accounts for around 90,000 units. Ashok Leyland partner
trucks in this segment. Ashok Leyland's EV Arm Switch Mobility showcased LCVs IeV3 and IeV4 a
month ago and will start production in January.
