The Indian government currently imposes a 50 percent export duty on molasses, a key ingredient in ethanol production. The reason for this is that this decision has been taken due to the possibility of reduction in the production of sugar and molasses in the current season. Ethanol is ethyl alcohol, also known as simple alcohol. Ethanol is produced by fermenting grain, sugarcane or sugar and molasses - anything with sufficient sugar content can be used to make alcohol. The ethanol fuel industry is tumultuous and controversial. In the United States, ethanol represents the only major initiative to convert food crops into transportation fuel. Currently, the government has imposed a 50 percent export duty on molasses, a key ingredient in ethanol production, effective January 18, according to a Finance Ministry notification. The government has sold around 6 million metric tonnes of wheat to local bulk buyers since June, a top official said earlier this month. The state-run Food Corporation of India has started selling grains from its warehouses. Despite the sale of wheat from w...
