The ban on India's rice exports has resulted in a supply shortfall of two million tonnes

The Indian government currently imposes a 50 percent export duty on molasses, a key ingredient in ethanol production. The reason for this is that this decision has been taken due to the possibility of reduction in the production of sugar and molasses in the current season.
Ethanol is ethyl alcohol, also known as simple alcohol. Ethanol is produced by fermenting grain, sugarcane or sugar and molasses - anything with sufficient sugar content can be used to make alcohol. The ethanol fuel industry is tumultuous and controversial. In the United States, ethanol represents the only major initiative to convert food crops into transportation fuel.
Currently, the government has imposed a 50 percent export duty on molasses, a key ingredient in ethanol production, effective January 18, according to a Finance Ministry notification.
The move is primarily aimed at increasing the availability of molasses for domestic distilleries and helping meet the government's ethanol blending targets, an official notification said. The government aims to achieve a 15 percent blend of ethanol with petrol this year. 690 liters of ethanol will be required to meet this target.
The government estimates that sugar production will be lower this season, which is expected to be around 32.3-33 million tonnes. Sugar production in the previous season was 37.3 million tonnes.
India has also gained recognition as a producer of jaggery, one of the leading traders and exporters of jaggery in the world. India accounts for more than 70% of the world's total jaggery production. The leading jaggery producing and exporting states in India are Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat.
