Ministry of Consumer Affairs is planning to tie up with various cooperative departments
Last Saturday, India's Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal told reporters that India currently has no plans to import wheat. The country's farmers are likely to reap a bumper crop this year that will boost stocks in the world's second-largest major producer.
He said, according to the ground report, wheat production has been quite good in the current year. This year's production is expected to be a record, around 114 million metric tonnes.
Although India is the second largest producer of wheat in the world, in May 2022, the Indian government imposed a ban on the export of wheat. This decision was taken to control prices of foodgrains and prices in the domestic market, especially due to the impact of the Ukraine-Russia war.
The government has sold around 6 million metric tonnes of wheat to local bulk buyers since June, a top official said earlier this month. The state-run Food Corporation of India has started selling grains from its warehouses. Despite the sale of wheat from warehouses, the state warehouse inventory is likely to be above the target of 7.46 million MT when the new marketing year begins.
The country's wheat stocks in state warehouses stood at 16.47 million metric tonnes as of January 1, the lowest since 2017.
India's Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said the Indian government will continue to ban exports of wheat, rice and sugar for the time being. We are committed to protecting the interests of both consumers and farmers.
Apart from wheat production, India also ranks second in the world in rice production. Last year, the Indian government also banned the export of non-basmati white rice. And Delhi also stopped mills from exporting sugar this year.
He also said that the Indian government currently has no immediate plans to allow duty-free imports.
